Top Tips from the November Case Study Students!
Our latest survey results are in and there are some interesting findings...
Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to complete our November MCS Experience Survey so far, we've had some interesting results. I have spoken before about the importance of learning from past students and it's important for any future MCS student to look at these survey results and see what they can learn going towards their own case study exam.
How difficult was the exam compared to your expectations?
The first result worth sharing is that 55% surveyed found the exam to be "more difficult" or "much more difficult" than they had expected. This is a clear signal to all students how serious and challenging this exam can be. Only 5% of respondents actually found it to be easier than they had expected. From my experience, when more students find the exam very difficult the examiners are more relaxed in their marking, so do not panic. However, in future anticipate what sort of questions you will be asked to complete, especially really difficult ones, that way you can ready yourself for whatever is thrown at you.
What do you wish you had spent MORE time on during your preparation?
There were a number of key areas that students felt they should have spent more time on during the build up to the exam, but the most popular was "mock exam practice" followed by "revision of theory". In my experience, getting into the theory early will give you that extra bit of confidence when getting to know the pre-seen, whilst making a clear revision schedule will make the process of revising a lot more organised and less stressful. Mock exams are also crucial in the run up to the real exam, keep doing them and learning from your mistakes under timed conditions to best prepare you for the real thing.
What tips would you offer future MCS students?
This is always a really useful question to ask students, as the recommendations come first-hand from those who have expereinced the exams recently. Here are a few of the answers:
• Do mock exams regularly to calm your nerves before you get into the real exam.
• Revise the manuals first (you cannot answer a topic if you don't know anything), read the pre-seen over & over, know the industry & real-life examples, then practice, practice, practice using mock exams based on the industry in the pre-seen.
• Time management is key. Keep calm and use common sense.
